A Rustic Sunday Night Roast!

A few weeks ago my husband & I challenged ourselves to a “My Kitchen Rules” style cook-off  with a bunch of our close friends! What started out as a fairly casual Sunday afternoon dinner challenge soon turned into a full blown, competitive cook-off spread over three weeks, with each couple required to make a 3 course meal judged on taste, presentation, ambience & decor! Eek!

I lost Paper Scissors Rock so unfortunately we had to cook first. And of course we left it all to the last minute. Luckily I’m a bit of a hoarder and had lots of rustic decor at home that I could use. But god help me trying to find a (decent) florist open on Sunday afternoon at the Gold Coast to buy beautiful rustic flowers for the table decor I had in mind (Janine I should have called you earlier!) I eventually resorted to Coles, pulling out a few pretty roses and mismatched flowers in amongst their tragic bouquets. (except the yellow Billy Balls which I already had).

A few scattered doilies, mismatched antique bottles, old tins, white vintage chairs, cheese-board entree plates & paper lunch bag menus later… and we had ourselves the setting for a rustic roast dinner! For our entree we served a selection of cheeses with fig and walnut confit. Our main was a Roast Pork with crackling and whole baked apples. For dessert I made sticky date pudding with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice-cream! It was amazing, if I do say so myself.

Here are some snapshots of our meal and table decor (all cooked & decorated in 2 hours!). Can’t wait to see what kind of competition we have next Sunday at the Durbidge’s house. No pressure. ha x
